Adventure Therapy
Adventure Therapy is about understanding how to create and sustain meaning in your life. Meaning is perhaps the greatest defense against mental health issues we have as human beings. This is an existential perspective, examining the balance between risk and competence in whatever it is that you are doing, or not doing, in your life.
Although the word “adventure” may inspire thoughts of far away places or extreme sports, this is a broadly applicable therapy approach.
Adventure Therapy encourages personal growth. It can involve figuring out where fear and inaction are getting in your way or where you are pushing too hard and ending up ineffective and stressed. It’s about balance and learning to be in a flow state.
In practice, Adventure Therapy can involve processing your experiences outside of therapy through the lens of Adventure Theory, as well as advice on how to pursue new experiences and habits. It can also involve in-person therapist participation in your adventures. This could happen in a variety of forms, such as outdoor sports, wilderness experiences, travel, or other areas in which you might be looking to challenge yourself.
I am available for Adventure Therapy outings and intensives for individuals, couples, and families. Please get in touch so that we can discuss what might best suit your needs.
